INTERIM PASTOR - Rev Thomas Robison
Pastor Tom, as he is usually called, often expresses his appreciation of his call to Bethany Church as Interim Minister. Though he is not a UCC pastor, but ELCA [an ecumenical partner with UCC], he has quickly learned the letters do not matter. The Open and Affirming status of Bethany is just one of the many characteristics he has found to be significant. He comes from a varied church experience—beginning with internship in inner city Philadelphia, city churches in Minneapolis and Duluth, Minnesota, redevelopment of a new mission start in Houston, a suburban Houston church, and a downtown congregation here in San Antonio. He is trained and has experience in intentional interim ministry [meaning the transitional work necessary for the congregation to prepare for a new pastor]. Special interests include classical guitar, walking/water jogging, leading Men’s Group at Haven for Hope, and reading. He and Claudia reside in a condo in Olmos Park. They have two daughters and families in SA, and one in Grapevine, Texas—including 7 grandchildren and three grand-dogs. Tom’s view of the world is that all people are created in God’s image and that God’s grace is freely given to all.
Student Pastor - Jenny Perkins
Jenny is a seminary student at Lexington Theological Seminary. She is in a hybrid Masters of Divinity program that allows her to do much of her course work online and her internship here in San Antonio, while traveling to Lexington, KY each year for courses as well. She is a Member in Discernment and is seeking ordination through the United Church of Christ. She is grateful for the trust that the congregation of Bethany has put in her as she learns to put her ministry into practice here. One area of special interest is immigration, having participated in a recent border issues orientation [see picture] and helping provide care for women and children recently released from detention here in Texas.
When not involved in seminary studies and church work, Jenny stays busy raising her four children and enjoying life with them. Juggling all of this is only possible with the immense support and encouragement she receives from her husband, Bob…who is also her favorite travel companion!
Church Office—Desiree Garza
Des is a neighbor in the Dellview community, with a son at Dellview Elementary where she is on PTA Board and volunteers in a variety of ways. She is an enthused worker who is enjoying getting to know us—and some of the uniqueness of a church office and congregation.
Church Pianist - Stephanie Sepaugh
Stephanie came to Bethany in June 2011 to fill the position of pianist. She soon realized that Bethany was one of the best-kept secrets in town, and today she celebrates that the word is getting out about the treasure that Bethany is & the resource it offers to not only its members, but also to the Dellview neighborhood and to San Antonio at large.
Stephanie's background is in music education and educational administration; she taught public school music for 14 years before moving into health care. These days, she stays busy working as a TX-licensed massage therapist & massage instructor, managing rental properties for a friend, taking care of her animals, & participating in Bethany's music program. She loves that music of all sorts is such a vital part of Bethany's worship, and invites you to come and enjoy and participate.
Minister of Music - Xavier Leath
Xavier Leath is a native of Knoxville, TN and the performance of music in all forms has been a lifelong passion. His musical taste range from opera to rock and everything in between. He is a graduate from Tenn Tech University where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. After teaching choral music and classical guitar in Atlanta, GA he decided to explore other employment opportunities, but through the years he has continued to direct choirs and theatrical productions.
Xavier has performed with various musical groups such as Atlanta Symphony Chorus, Tongue and Grove (a vocal jazz ensemble), San Antonio Opera, Master Singers and San Antonio Record Society. He enjoys being the Minister of Music at Bethany Congregational United Church Christ and working for Dell Inc. as Client Delivery Executive, but most of all the role of “X Factor” with Soul Stick Q. He currently lives in San Antonio, TX with wife Aixa.
